Classes are held at Sowood Community Centre HX4 9HY on Tuesday evenings and Sunday mornings. Location is ideal for dog owners living in the Halifax, Sowerby Bridge Elland, Brighouse and Huddersfield areas and close to the M62 for those living further afield.
We are proud to have been one of the first Dog Training Clubs in the Country to offer set, structured courses for dogs and their owners.
Our Classes are designed for you. Owners who would like to have a well behaved dog at home. A dog that will walk nicely on lead without pulling, will come back to you when called off lead even with distractions and respond well to basic commands. Although classes are held at our indoor venue due to its semi rural location training will also be carried out outdoors for walking on lead and recall where we have the use of local fields. The course is specifically tailored to the teaching and training of owners and their dogs
First Week of the course is just for owners. We will talk about how dogs learn, rewards and praise, training methods, equipment, chance to ask questions plus so much more. This session will last approximately 1 hour 30 minutes
Week Two to Eight – Each session with dogs will last 50 Minutes

All our walks will be carried out outdoors ie local pavements – with the aim of teaching your dog to walk nicely on a loose lead. We will not be using check chains or choke chains.
Most owners tend to be okay in getting their dogs back when off lead in quiet areas, but struggle when the environment gets more interesting. ie other dogs, people. We will be looking at getting your dog back irrespective of distractions.
Again many owners struggle to get their dogs to respond to basic commands when out on walks or when visitors arrive at their home. We will be looking at getting your dog to respond to you even when the environment is very doggy excitable!
You will be surprised how many owners struggle to groom and handle their dogs without their dog trying to chew the brush, towel, or hands! By the end of the course you will be able to groom and handle your dog under control.
Some owners have lost a little control of their dogs even before they start their walk. ie their dog has dragged them out of the house and down the drive and the walk has become a trial even before they get to the pavement! We will be looking at leaving your home with your dog under control.
Crack all of these and wow your relationship with your dog will change for the better forever.

Due to the high amount of recommendations we receive, courses tend to fill very quickly so book early to avoid disappointment. Maximum of 6 dogs per course. If you have a very difficult/unruly dog, experiencing problems such as aggression or your dog is reactive to others, would prefer to learn on an individual basis, would like to start training before the next schedules courses or unable to attend the classes for whatever reason, take a look at the information on our Home Visit page.
The next available 8 week Junior / Dog Courses are starting on Sunday 22nd March 2026, where there is a choice of two classes :-

The fee for the 8 week course is £120.00, and suitable for dogs 5 months of age and over . Your place will be booked once the below enrolment form has been sent and the course fee paid. You can either pay by cheque or bank transfer.
The first morning or evening of each course is without dogs and starts at 11 a.m. for everybody on the Sunday morning courses and 8 p.m. for everybody on the Tuesday evening course. From the second week onwards the course will be split into groups and at the time you state below. Either 9 a.m or 11 a.m for those wishing to book on the Sunday Course or 8 p.m on the Tuesday Course.
This course is not suitable for dogs that are aggressive / reactive or overly worried towards other dogs / people. If you are unsure just get in touch.

I’ve been attending classes for some time now and the magnificent change towards good dog behaviour is evident in all the dogs present. Training the owner to train the dog through a reward system, reaps benefits very quickly and the dogs are relaxed, but also the social aspect of seeing dogs of all shapes, sizes and breeds interacting happily is testament to the commitment of David Evans. Nothing better than seeing dogs share treats at the end of training without a grizzle or a push between them! Very happy dogs make for very happy owners.
As a dog owner for many years I decided to take my dog Olive, a mini labradoodle, to David’s puppy classes, mainly so that she could meet other puppies. I quickly realised that the classes were very worthwhile and extremely enjoyable so I continued with the junior dog class. I was amazed at the progress she made with help and advice from David plus practice at home. David really knows what he’s talking about. I would recommend his classes to any dog owner. Even experienced dog owners will learn something.
Have just completed the six week puppy course with our Labrador and have nothing but praise for David who has taught us and our puppy so so much. Would highly recommend this course. Best dog walking service in the area as well.
